Schwoby's RDR2 Strategy Guide

Fence

The Fence is equivalent to a modern day shady pawn shop and there are five available locations with three different types of services being offered. One location accepts the sale of horses. Another location accepts the sale of stage coaches. There are four locations, one of which is the same as the stage coach location, that accepts the sale of valuables. It’s at these four locations that you can also purchase items.

Rhodes, Saint Denis, & Van Horn are the three ‘normal’ fence locations, and they are all available from the start of chapter 2. You will unlock a fourth fence location at Emerald Ranch, but more on that later. The primary use of the fence is to convert gold, jewelry, and other valuables into money. The purpose of the fence is to craft trinkets and talisman. You can also purchase a variety of items and documents from the fence. As you progress though the story, new documents and items will become available and weapons will become unlocked.

The Emerald Ranch fence becomes available during the mission ‘The Spines of America’. Seamus is the contact at this location and he will accept all hitched wagons and coaches with the two exceptions, Bank Stagecoaches and Flatbed Wagons. The condition of the wagon/coach doesn’t seem affect the sale price, regardless of if Seamus complains about its condition or not. If you walk around to the right side of the barn, where Seamus stands when you're not selling wagons, he acts like a normal fence and will buy and sell valuables.

The Fence location North-West of Rhodes accepts only horses and you cannot purchase anything from this fence location. It is run by a pair of twin brothers, Clay & Clive, and becomes unlocked during the mission ‘Horse Flesh for Dinner’. If you take a stage coach to this location, they will turn you away. You can, however, cut the horses free, abandon the coach, and the coach horses will then be accepted since they are not attached to the coach anymore. Additionally, you can negotiate a higher selling price for the horse as you bond with the horse. Personally, I have found that the extra sale price isn’t worth the extra effort to bond past level 2.
